Sunnybank Private Hospital now become the innovators of newborn safety and lead the way in newborn patient safety in Australia.

Albeit a last minute decision, Babywatch can see the gift bag being a permanent fixture in all trials and implementations of the Babywatch infant identification, baby management system.

We think it would be a fantastic idea to include local small businesses within the gift bag, giving them great exposure to parents and new mums. After a great initial response for such a last minute decision, it was quite gratifying.

We thank all the businesses below for showing such great support and initiative to donate their time and money to be apart of the gift bag and, the Babywatch’s launch into Sunnybank Private Hospital.

Breastfeeding Book

At last a breastfeeding book that tells it like it is!

This book has been written by mothers for mothers. It aims to help pregnant women and new mothers prepare themselves for a successful feeding relationship with their babies. Lets face it, mothers can give the best advice and tips as they have done it all before.

A big thank you to Author Melissa Macdonald who kindly donated 120 of these books for the Babywatch gift bag!

The Herald Sun reported the wrong baby was given to a mother to breastfeed at Sandringham Hospital last year, the information coming to light just weeks after a similar incident at St John of God Hospital in Geelong.

Just a few weeks after two babies at one Victorian hospital were handed to the wrong mothers, a Nine News investigation has revealed 25 adverse event reports into bungles in Sydney public hospital maternity wards, including seven alone in 2010.

In one case at St George Hospital that occurred on December 5, 2010, a radiographer failed to check a baby’s wrist ID band before subjecting the wrong baby to chest x-rays from a mobile machine after nursery staff indicated the wrong crib. The treatment was intended for a baby in an adjacent crib.

An inquiry into the matter gave the incident an Actual Severity Assessment Code rating of “serious” requiring a root cause analysis report.

New fears were raised today over the state of maternity care in London, as the NHS faces soaring numbers of complaints and crippling bills for negligence.

Legal action launched by families over maternity unit deaths or poor care has increased by up to a quarter in a year.

The increase was revealed as it emerged that poor maternity care in London is costing the health service £41?million a year in compensation, including cases where children have been left with brain damage, cerebral palsy or developmental delay.

The obstetrics payouts account for almost half of the total NHS compensation bill for the capital, which was £85?million in the year to the end of April last year.

The babies spent more than eight hours with the wrong mothers, after being handed to them at 6.30am last Friday at St John of God Hospital.

Hospital chief executive Stephen Roberts told 3AW a family member alerted the hospital staff to the mix up at 3pm.

It is understood during the eight and a half hours the mothers breastfed the babies, and played with them.

The incident may have occurred after the babies identification bracelets were not checked against those of the mothers.

“Human error” has been blamed for giving the babies to the wrong mothers.

In a statement issued today the hospital said it “deeply regrets” the incident which occurred in the maternity unit.
