We are obligated as health professionals to respect and acknowledge the security of both mother and infant through care and discharge, safeguarding the baby and providing peace of mind for parents.
As midwives, we enable empowerment, safety, comfort and confidence. All of these principles must translate into post-birth baby protection. The duty to ensure the safety of the newborn baby following birth does not merely stop upon the transfer of mother and baby to the post-natal maternity ward, special care, neonatal intensive care unit, or home.
